Rev. Adam and Deac. Melissa DeGroot serve the Lord through The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) as national (domestic) missionaries in Philadelphia, Pa. In this role, Adam and Melissa are responsible for planting new mission congregations in Philadelphia, a city of 1.5 million people with only two viable LCMS congregations. They work to implement new after-school programs, carry out inner-city mission outreach (i.e., feeding the homeless, crisis counseling, pregnancy counseling, etc.), and establish vibrant campus ministry programs at the campuses of Temple University, the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University and Villanova University. They also hold regular Divine services at Shepherd of the City Lutheran Church, their current mission congregation in Philadelphia. In addition, Adam preaches and teaches at Logos Lutheran fellowship in Center City Philadelphia in cooperation with Pastor Rob Kieselowsky. Adam and Melissa also look forward to coordinating the formation of a classical academy in northeast Philadelphia and a youth leadership academy.
Adam grew up in Rapid City, S.D. He became an LCMS Lutheran as an adult while attending St. Paul Lutheran Church, Spearfish, S.D. He earned bachelor’s degrees from Western Washington University, Bellingham, and Black Hills State University, Spearfish, S.D. He received his Master of Divinity from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne. His hobbies include fishing, hunting, hiking, biking and rock climbing.
Melissa was born in Springfield, Mo. Growing up, she attended Our Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church, Smithfield, R.I. Adam and Melissa have one son, Knox, who is a ninja in training and with whom they enjoy spending time.
Pray for the DeGroot family as they serve in Philadelphia. Ask God to continue to strengthen them for the work He has created for them to do in this city and the surrounding areas. Pray for the current and prospective members of Shepherd of the City Lutheran Church. Pray also for the men and women who faithfully serve the members of the community and church through their public service. Ask God to soften the hearts of the people of Philadelphia and direct them toward the saving Gospel of Jesus. Ask God to open the ears of His children to hear the Gospel in this country and around the world. Let us give thanks for the DeGroots serving as missionaries in Philadelphia.
