We will once again offer the Easter Vigil, Saturday, April 3rd, from 6-9 pm. This is NOT a regular service; there is no liturgy, no singing, no preaching. The Sanctuary is filled with sacred music playing softly and an “Easter Vigil” devotion is passed out by the ushers for the individual to read and meditate on. If the entire devotion was read it could take 45 minutes to an hour. However, how much is read is up to each individual. The Ushers will be there to pass out the “Easter Vigil” devotion and to answer questions.

Attention High School & Jr. High Youth! On Saturday April 3rd , come help set and prepare food for the Annual Easter Sunday Breakfast. We will meet at the church and work from 4-6 pm on Saturday and then go out for free pizza and soft drinks. We also need 6-8 youth Easter morning to help prepare, serve and bus tables from 7-9 am. Parents are welcome to help.

Next month we gather shaving creams, razors and after-shaves for some of Seattle’s homeless. If possible put one of these items into our lounge basket.

THE CROSS IS ALWAYS RELEVANT...Issues, Etc. Is a radio talk show hosted by LCMS Pastor Todd Wilken and produced by Lutheran Public Radio. Topics include: The Events of Good Friday According to Luke, The Hymn “Ride on Ride on in Majesty,” Martin Luther on the Passion of Christ, The Penitential Psalms, The Hymn “What Is This Bread?” and more. Today in Sunday School - The key point of Sunday School today was that Jesus is our Passover Lamb, who with His very body and blood grants us forgiveness, life, and salvation. The children learned about the Last Supper, the Lord’s Supper (Luke 22:1-23). In your family discussions, talk about the benefits and blessings that we receive in the Lord’s Supper. Talk about and remind the children that such benefits are theirs through their Baptism, in Holy Absolution (the forgiveness of God spoken by the Pastor), and through God’s Word, which is preached and taught to them. In the catechism, review the Lord’s Supper.

It’s never TOO early to think of Vacation Bible School. Save the date, June 28-July 2. Read your April Messenger for ways you could volunteer.

Mark Your Calendars! The opening communion service for the Puget Sound Pastors’ Conference will be held at Messiah, April 13th, at 7 pm. Our choir and ensemble will also be participating! Professor Reed Lessing of our St. Louis Seminary will be preaching. Reception to follow.

Did you know that Messiah has formed a Technology Committee? It's our goal to keep Messiah on the cutting edge of the Information Age. Look out your window and you can see spring is here, and that means it is time for the children’s Easter Service. This year, “The Eggs of Easter” is the title of the service. Everyone is invited to the children’s Easter Service on Easter morning at 9:20 a.m. in the Sanctuary. Parents: There will be a practice on Saturday morning, April 3rd beginning at 10:00 am and finishing by 11:30 am. Please have your children in their classroom on Easter Sunday morning by 9:00 am.

MESSENGER DEADLINE is this Sunday.

Today in Sunday School. In today’s Sunday School lesson the children learned how in faith, a sinful woman lovingly anointed Jesus’ feet. They also learned how in faith we grasp God’s free mercy, receive the forgiveness of sins, and respond with acts of love and praise. As a family, consider ways that you might respond to God’s mercy. Ask your children what sins God will forgive (all of them!), and in your catechism review, look at the section about the Confession of Sins.

Keith Brosz, former Concordia Lutheran School Principle and friend to many, is retiring after 39 years in educational ministry. NEW EDUCATION OPPORTUNITY: Jim Grant is leading a study of the book of ACTS—Luke’s account of the beginning of the LORD’S church–the continuation of spreading the Gospel–a bridge between the four Gospels and the Epistles. The new class began last Thursday, March 11. Come join us!

Today in Sunday School - The children learned that as Jesus healed the ten men with leprosy, Jesus forgives and heals us from the sickness of sin and death (Luke 17:11-19). Discuss with your children how in faith we respond with thankful hearts, praising Him for His love for us. Talk about what it means to be healed of our sin-sickness. How do we thank God for His grace? As a family, consider the words of the Second Article of the Apostles’ Creed.

Today in Sunday School - The children will study the temptation of Jesus (Luke 4:1-13). Like us, Jesus was tempted by Satan to sin. Yet, for us, He overcame all temptation because we cannot. In your family discussions, consider how we are tempted to rely on ourselves and trust in our powers. Provide examples. Assure your children that God lovingly provides all that we need for this life and eternity, doing all things for us and ordering our days and life in His peace.

Today in Sunday School: Today is Transfiguration Sunday, and the account of Jesus’ transfiguration is the Bible lesson (Luke 9:28-36) in Sunday School. On the Mount of Transfiguration, God showed that His Son, Jesus, is the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets, declaring that we should listen to Jesus, our Savior. In discussing this Bible story, ask family members to consider how they are like Peter, not always understanding Jesus’ ways and purpose. In His Word, Jesus patiently instructs me about Himself by the power of the Holy Spirit. Ask the children to recall their favorite Bible stories about Jesus.

Today is Scout Sunday. This Sunday in February is designated as Scout Sunday across the nation. The Scouting movement here in the US started in 1910, and we’re celebrating the 100th Anniversary this year! Messiah Lutheran has sponsored Cub Pack 177 and Boy Scout Troop 177 for over 50 years. The 3 Aims of the Scouting program are: character development, citizenship training and mental and physical fitness. These Aims are accomplished through outdoor activities, personal growth, leadership development, advancement, and, most importantly, having FUN. Check out the display in the narthex, of all the various activities we’ve done over the past year. In Baptism, Jesus chooses us to be His children. In His Baptism, Jesus chooses us to be His children. Talk about how sin causes us to want to hide form Jesus and doubt that He is who He says He is. Underscore that in Jesus’ forgiveness we find peace and favor with God, whose Word testifies repeatedly and consistently that Jesus is God’s Son.

Today in Sunday School: The lesson was about Jesus healing many people (Luke 4:31-44). Through many miracles, Jesus shows us His power over sin. Ask your children to tell you who Jesus healed. What were some of the sicknesses the people had? Talk about sin- yours, theirs, the world’s and how Satan holds the world in bondage, causing sickness and death. Assure them that Jesus is the Holy One of God, who defeats Satan and frees us from His hold, granting us eternal life in paradise. Emphasize that Jesus has power over sin and sickness, saving the lost by His death and resurrection.

In Nazareth, throughout His ministry, and even today, Jesus is rejected by people who do not have faith in Him. God’s Word clearly shows that Jesus is God’s Son, and in faith, we believe. With your family, discuss how sin blinds our eyes to the Savior and causes us to suffer from sin’s effects with sickness, trouble, and even physical death. Emphasize that through God’s Word and Sacraments we can see and believe in Jesus, who releases us from the bondage of sin. He restores us with forgiveness, life, and salvation.

Today in Sunday School the children learned the story of Jesus’ first miracle, the changing of water into wine at the wedding in Cana (John 2:1-11). Through His first miracle, Jesus revealed Himself to be true God. God uses His Word and physical means - water, bread, and wine - to reveal to us the Jesus is our Savior. Discuss the story with your children and talk about how we are like the disciples, not sure just who Jesus is. At times, we also doubt Him and His Word. Emphasize that in His Word and Sacraments, Jesus shows us that He is the Savior, conquering our doubts with these visible means. We hear Jesus in His Word and see Him in His Sacraments.

LADY - Just a week after my report on Lady in the January Messenger, she had to be put to sleep on January 6th . Lady was 13.5 years old and was a joyous part not only of the Lassman family ut also here at Messiah as many of you knew her through Bible classes, Catechism classes and other events. “Church” Lady will be missed. Thank you all for your expressions of concern and support.

Seattle Lutheran Schools Open House - The staff and faculty of Seattle Lutheran High School invite you to join us for an Open House on Thursday, January 28, 2010, from 6:30 - 8:00pm.

“Come join the Confessions Reading Group. Beginning February 1st we will start reading the Augsburg Confession and discussing it. While this isn’t a formal class we are learning about our Lutheran confession of faith, our Lutheran heritage, and about our Lutheran fathers as we read and discuss the Book of Concord. We meet in the “youth room” upstairs at 7:00 PM every Monday.

Compass Cascade and Immanuel Lutheran - Every month we have the opportunity to help the homeless, simply by bringing in a specific item. This month we are collecting new/gently used bath towels in our lounge. Please help the homeless.

Today in Sunday School -Jesus’ Baptism (Luke 3:15-22) is the bible story taught in Sunday School today. God sent the Holy Spirit at Jesus’ Baptism, announcing that Jesus was God’s son. At our Baptism, God makes us His children through the work of the Holy Spirit. Let your children tell you the dramatic events of this story, and share with them that because of God’s wrath and anger over sin, the people were looking for a Savior. We, too, need a Savior, for God is angry with our sin. But thanks be to God, who in His mercy makes clear at Jesus’ Baptism that we need look no more, for the Savior is here!

LADY - Just a week after my report on Lady, our dog in the January Messenger, she had to be put to sleep on January 6th . Lady was 13.5 years old and was a joyous part not only of the Lassman family but also here at Messiah as many of you knew her through Bible classes, Catechism classes and other events. “Church” Lady will be missed. Thank you all for your expressions of concern and support.

Perhaps you have a bath towel at home which sits on a shelf? Immanuel Lutheran or Women’s Compass Cascade could use it. We are now collecting bath towels in our lounge.

Pastor’s AIC class will be meeting again until January 7th when the class will resume with lesson 14, “The Last Things” (the end of the world).

Today in Sunday School -In Sunday School today, the lesson was about the boy Jesus in the temple. (Luke 2:41-52). As a boy, Jesus was found in His Father’s house. In God’s house I hear His Word, see that Jesus is my Savior, and receive His gifts of forgiveness and salvation. Because of sin, we are like Jesus’ parents and do not understand what God says to us. We don’t recognize who Jesus truly is - our Savior. Talk about how through Baptism and the power of God’s Word, the Holy Spirit makes clear to us that Jesus is God’s Son and our Savior.
