WE FILTER THE WORLD THROUGH OUR MIND
My Fellow Redeemed in Christ,
I love iced tea. We make it in our house a lot. To get some nice iced tea you first have to put some tea bags in some water and bring the water to a boil. Then you let it steep for the tea flavor to saturate the water. But occasionally, one or more of the tea bags breaks and some loose tea is floating in the water. If this happens you have to pour the tea water into a pitcher using a strainer to filter out the tea leaves so that only “pure” tea water goes into the pitcher.
This is how our Christian Mind filters out the sinful elements of the world we live in. Not all minds are the same. Some people are smarter than other people are; we call this IQ, Intelligence Quotient. But there are also Christian minds and Non-Christian minds. Human beings are born into this world with minds that are set AGAINST GOD. For example, Paul writes in Romans 8:7: “The sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.” The mind untouched by Jesus Christ thinks like the sinful world. What matters to the mind untouched by Christ is what it wants. The mind becomes its own standard for right and wrong, good and bad. But the mind touched by God’s love and forgiveness in Jesus Christ is different. Indeed, through faith in Jesus Christ we have a Christian Mind as Paul says in 1 Corinthians 2:16: “But we have the mind of Christ.” This mind is different.
For just as Jesus wanted to live for His Heavenly Father, so likewise our mind wants to live for God in Jesus Christ, as John reminds us in his first letter: “If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in Him.” And so the mind of Christ “filters” what it sees, hears and experiences in this world. This mind is always asking “Is this pleasing to God or not?” Such things as:
+ All religious/spiritual questions about God; + how God’s Name is to be used; + faithfully hearing God’s Word at Sunday services; + honoring parents and authorities; + not hurting others; + how we use God’s gift of sexuality; + not stealing from others; + not gossiping about others; + dealing with issues of contentment and greed.
A Christian mind filters issues such as cheating; pre-marital sex; abortion; divorce; homosexuality. A Christian mind filters what kind of movies to see (Pornography?), what kind of activities to participate in (what's that teenager doing at a keger!?). In other words, instead of using our own mind to determine what is right or wrong, good or bad----we use the mind of Christ---we use our mind has it has been “transformed” as Paul says in Ephesians: “Be made new in the attitude of your minds, and put on the new self created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”
We cannot do this on our own. God has given us the mind of Christ through His Word and Baptism. And for our minds to be continually renewed in Christ we frequently hear God’s Word preached and taught, receive His Body and blood and daily remember our baptism for the forgiveness of our sins. And this is a life-long process. True, we are saved by faith in Jesus through the forgiveness of all our sins. Our being made right with God, our “justification”, is complete “It is finished!” But our living for Him is not. This is a process. And so all of our life our mind is always being transformed by God’s Word and Sacraments. Or the opposite---our Christian mind is shrinking and becoming “dysfunctional” because we don’t use God’s Word and Sacraments. The longer a “Christian” stays away from Sunday Services the more their “mind of Christ” deteriorates. As our culture becomes more and more “Post-Christian” we all need (and especially our teenagers) to be reminded of how we Christians are “different” from the “world”. And it all begins with our minds.
So, then, let us joyously avail ourselves of God’s Word, His supper, and our baptism so that as our minds are transformed by God’s love and forgiveness in Jesus Christ they might “filter” all we see, hear, and experience in this world. For surely, if it is important to use a strainer to filter out tea leaves from the water to have a good glass of iced tea---how much more important to use our Christian mind to filter the sinful things of the world out of our lives so that they might be more pleasing to our God who loves us so much in His Son?
PS. On a personal note, Kathy and I will be going to Germany on May 26 and returning June 6. Rev. Richard Flath will be our guest preacher. The tour will be conducted by two faculty members of our seminary in Ft. Wayne, Indiana and will include seeing Wittenberg where Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses as well as the Passion Play in Oberammergau. Kathy and I lived near Nuremburg from July of 1969 to January of 1972 and we are looking forward to returning after all these years.
In Christ,
Pastor Lassman
YOUTH CORNER
by Jim Pierce
I want to give our youth a hearty “Thank you!” for their help in preparing for the Easter Breakfast and special thanks goes to Marjelee, Brian, Marie, and Roger who worked very hard on Easter morning in heating and serving breakfast as well as in cleaning up and much more. Thank you all for putting on yet another successful and wonderful Easter morning meal for the congregation!
The next coming month will be busy for our youth as we prepare for the Higher Things conference being held in Ogden, Utah the last week in June. Please see the Senior High Youth bulletin board for more information about the Higher Things conference.
On May 15th, we will take out our golf clubs for “miniature golf” at the Interbay Golf Center. Rates are just $8 per adult and $6 for those under 14. Come join in on the fun at Interbay and we encourage parents to come along, too. Don’t forget to sign up for this event on the signup sheet on the youth bulletin board.
Sunday, May 23rd, the youth attending the Higher Things conference will be putting on a car wash after late service. The car wash will be held at “A Northeast Cleaners” on the corner of 35th Avenue NE and NE 70th Street. Donations will be accepted for washing cars and all proceeds earned will be used to help offset the costs in attending the conference.
Mark your calendars for a servant event to be held on June 12th. Specific times and location will be announced and put in the bulletin.
Message from the Vicar: The End is Near!
No, I’m not talking about my time here at Messiah as your Vicar but, for the world! Now that I have your attention, let’s get down to business. Lately, I have seen a number of different media sources speaking out about the end of the world. There have been big budget films, best selling books and more website than you can shake a stick at, all talking about the end of the world. Most of them seem focused around the year 2012 A.D. After all, according to the Hopis and Mayan calendars, December 21, 2012 A.D. will be the end of the world! (Insert scary music here.) I’m going to go out on a very thick limb and make a prophecy of my own, I don’t know when the world will end but, I can tell you it won’t be December 2012. How can I make such a bold prediction? Because I don’t believe in the predictions of dead, human sacrificing pagans. I believe in the living Word of God, the Bible.
Jesus tells us, “But concerning that day and hour (of His return) no one knows, not even the angels of Heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.” (ESV Mt. 24:36) The end can’t be at midnight on December 21, 2012 A.D. Why? Because that’s when people are expecting it and no one knows when it’s all over, except God! I find it interesting that even in our enlightened modern age people are still worried about the end of the world. Predictions about the end of the world appear throughout history and across almost every culture. A scientific explanation for this could look like, “During the course of human evolution man’s brain developed an irrational fear of blah blah blah…” As Christians we know that is simply not the case. We do know however, that man shares a common ancestor in Noah. We also know that God had almost completely destroyed this earth before. I think that this shared memory would have a huge impact on the memories and stories of ancient peoples and may even drive them to predict that it will happen again, but this time with no survivors. Man had known from The Fall that someday this world will end. It is this memory that has given rise to all these predictions.
Should Christians be worried about the end of the world? No and yes. We know that Jesus could return at any moment. However, we could also be called home to our Lord at any moment by a number of more common things. He tells us, “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.” (ESV Mt. 25:13) So there is no need to worry; the End of the world should worry us no more than the end of our lives. The Lord tells us “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.” (ESV Mt. 6:34a) Don’t worry about things you can’t control or even know. The only thing that should concern us is for the people who don’t know Him when He does return. So be of good cheer. The Lord is with us, we are forgiven. When the End comes, the greatest celebration in history will just be getting started.
Lord’s blessings,
Vicar Mankin

SUNDAY SCHOOL INVITATION
Did you know our Sunday School classes start for children at about age three? We notice some new youngsters that look like they are about that age. Please come downstairs any Sunday that is convenient for you and join an exciting time for the little ones. We have lessons just for that age group and they will find a new group of friends learning about the love of Jesus.
We welcome you to our group.
I am also looking for pictures of the Easter Children’s Service! If you brought your camera, and have pictures, I would love to get copies. Please let me know!
Council and Elders Recommend Beginning Assistant Pastor Call Process
This fall, the Council will be asking the congregation for permission to begin the process of calling an Assistant Pastor to start as early as the fall of 2011. Let me be very clear – PASTOR LASSMAN IS NOT LEAVING MESSIAH! Our next Vicar will serve from the summer of 2010 to the summer of 2011 and an Assistant Pastor would come after that. Pastor Lassman assures us that he intends to do the Lord’s work at Messiah as long as he can and perhaps until 2018 if God is gracious and allows his health and energy to remain strong. At this time, only God knows the exact date. The Council has met jointly with the Board of Elders and we are jointly considering this very important step prayerfully, methodically, with plenty of lead time and for two important reasons:
1) Our congregation is growing and, God willing, we will continue to grow for the next several years. The needs of the congregation may become too great for one Pastor (even one as good as Pastor Lassman) to handle.
2) Pastor Lassman will retire one day, whether we like it or not. The Council and Elders feel that it is best for the continuity of our congregation that an Assistant pastor be in place for some time before Pastor retires. This would allow the Assistant Pastor to potentially assume the duties of Head Pastor after working several years with Pastor Lassman.
God’s blessings have been abundant at Messiah. To remain stable and continue to grow, the Council believes this step to be prudent. This fall the Council and Elders will ask for your approval to:
1) Include an Assistant Pastor in the 2011 Spending Guide.
2) Plan for a call meeting in March or April, so the new Assistant Pastor can be installed after the next Vicar leaves at the end of July 2011.
This is obviously a decision to be made by the congregation and not without considerable discussion. That’s why the Council is letting you know this far in advance and why we plan to hold two congregational meetings this fall for you to become educated on the subject.
The first meeting will likely be in September and will be informational only. We will present the reasons why we are recommending an Assistant Pastor, budgetary impacts of this approach and allow time for a discussion. The second meeting will likely be in late November or early December and will allow us to discuss the proposal and vote on a path for the future.
If the congregation decides to call an Assistant Pastor, we would not make a call until the next Vicar leaves in July, 2011. At this point we are talking only generally about whether or not to give the Council authority to pursue this path and be financially prepared for it. We are not talking about specific names to fill the position. That decision would come next year and again not without congregational approval.
The Council and Elders hope that all members of Messiah would plan to attend the congregational meetings this fall. We will let you know further details about meeting dates as they become available.
Yours in Christ,
Neil Strege
Messiah President

Deaconess Diary
The campus is filled with birdsong and the sweet smell of flowering trees. The ancient church was wise to choose spring for the Easter festival--the rebirth of the natural world around us reminds us how Jesus' death and resurrection brings renewal to the entire cosmos.
Classes end on May 21, and then I have a one-week deaconess intensive where I will work on a special project. The third summer session begins in July, and I'm hoping to take two required classes then. In between, God willing, I may be able to come back to Seattle for a visit.
We held a debate in our small group class last Friday. Prof. Masaki assigned me as one of two people who spoke against infant baptism. The other two-person team defended it. The rest of the class were judges. Believe it or not, it was a tie! The debate was fun and edifying at the same time.
I can't wait to find out who the new vicar will be. And I'm eager to know where David Solum will be serving as a new pastor. As always, I continue to pray for God's blessings on all of you.
Your sister in Christ,
Gail Ludvigson

WE SHARE BECAUSE WE CARE ABOUT OTHERS
Our Congregation, Messiah Lutheran, as well as Compass Cascade and Immanuel Lutheran help some of Seattle’s homeless. Although it may be very tiring for us to buy something now and then for the homeless, the items we buy are very much necessities. This month we are gathering toothbrushes, toothpaste or body/hand lotions. If you can, please put these items in our lounge basket. If you are not able to do this, perhaps you will be able to in the future. Please take a slip of paper from the lounge basket, which lists each monthly item. Thank you for helping some of Seattle’s homeless. Please place used eye glasses in the box in the lounge. The Lion’s club will distribute them to people in need; nationally and internationally.

Johann Sebastian Bach
Johann Sebastian Bach is the second most famous Lutheran in history and it is a shame that he is not better known to American Lutherans today. His music is part of both high culture and (German) folk culture and has become easily available in our time.
Records and audio tapes and compact disks have successively made his music available for several generations. Music is an audio art form and these technologies provide this well. But there is an added quality (like a third dimension to painting) which makes the music live when the listener can watch the musicians performing. This opportunity is available on the home computer in the internet by the use of YouTube. This site provides many presentations of Bach’s compositions with a photograph or art work on the screen as the viewer listens. However, in this article I will only recommend those that have motion picture film of the musicians performing.
A short introduction to Johann Sebastian’s work and setting can be found in the film series “Civilization” by the English Art Historian Kenneth Clark. This documentary series was a big hit on television forty years ago, but unfortunately is little known now. Clark covers culture in Western Civilization from the end of the Roman Empire to the time of filming forty years ago. In the episode titled “The Pursuit of Happiness”, he presents the music of 18th Century German composers with film of German church architecture built in the early 1700’s. in order to find Bach, type in “Kenneth Clark civilization EP931.” After this ten minute film, choose “EP9#2.”
The six Brandenburg Concertos are Bach’s most famous instrumental compositions. A fine job of filming was done of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra performing the three movements of each Concerto in what appears to be an 18th Century mansion. This is most appropriate since it would be similar to the residences of Johann Sebastian’s baronial employers for whom he wrote most of his secular instrumental music. To find them, ask for “Freiburg baroque orchestra Brandenburg concertos” in the search box. Then from the list you should choose a Concerto number and either an Allegro which is lively/vigorous or and Andante or Adagio which are serene and reflective.
Bach wrote four known Oratorio style works. Of these, I think the best one to be found on You Tube is the Passion of Saint John. It is performed by the Bach Collegiums of Japan which is directed by Masaaki Suzuki. The recording was made at a concert hall in Tokyo. The chorus sings the music as written in German and there are printed subtitles in English. This makes the performance especially accessible for us.
The Passion is about equivalent to a long movie in length, but this is posted in twelve parts and it would be especially appropriate to view on part per day for twelve day in Lent. Johann Sebastian wrote in many chorales which you will recognize from our hymn book. In the You Tube search box ask for “Saint Johns Passion” and “Masaaki Suzuki” or “Bach Collegium Japan.” Finally, include a request for “1/12” for the first part up to “12/12.”
Our composer wrote over two hundred Cantatas while he was employed at St. Tomas church and school in Leipzig. The one that I think every Lutheran should hear is number 80. This is based on the hymn “A Mighty Fortress is Our God.” It is written in eight parts which incorporate the four verses in the hymnal. The best filmed performance that I found on You Tube was apparently copied from a television program. The musicians are probably Germans in an old church. Sadly, there is no English subscript, but I will photocopy the German text and English translation if any reader would like to have it. In the search box, ask for “ShartanX ein feste burg ist unser gott 1/4".” If this does not show this film, add “cantata 80.” As each part ends, ask for “2/4, 3/4, 4/4” in sequence for the one half hour Cantata.
Bach wrote much music for the pipe organ throughout his life. Of these, the best known is probably the “toccata and fugue in d minor.” Its fame is partly because Leopole Stokowski transcribed it for an orchestra and convinced Walt Disney to make it the first piece presented in his movie “Fantasia” which was released 70 years ago. The You Tube file that I like best was posted by “cphayles” and played by “Kurt Ison” at the Sydney Town Hall.
Until the late 18th century, there was no popular culture as we know it. Only the multifaceted realms of high culture and folk culture existed. Now popular culture is more prominent than the other two combined. But, it is good that the computer, which is the most sophisticated popular culture medium of all time, can bring the best of Western Civilizations art into our lives anywhere, anytime.
